ABOUT COACH LANCE
My name is Lance Pitlick and I am an Off-Ice Stickhandling and Shooting specialist working with hockey players in-person and online ranging from beginners to current NHL players. When I retired after 12 seasons of professional hockey, I was as far away from that job title as a person could be. I was a physical defenseman who took great pride in a big hit or blocking a shot. What I lacked in skill, I made up with heart and determination. I loved the game and played until my body told me I couldn’t do it anymore.
During my NHL playing career, I had the privilege of witnessing some of the greatest players of all-time, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Jaromir Jagr, who demonstrated their incredible skills to me in a very up close and personal manner.
At the end of each season, I would attend the mandatory meeting with the coaching staff where they would outline areas of my game that needed improvement. Every year without fail I was told to improve my stick-handling and shooting skills in the off-season.
Yet back then there really were no available sources dedicated to instructing players (even NHL pros) on the finer points of how to improve their puck handling and shooting ability. While my playing career ended, my passion for the game did not and I eventually had the notion to create a business around my love of the game. I credit my two young sons for taking my life in a new direction. You see, growing up in Minnesota they began developing a strong interest in hockey and the game was evolving into one that placed a greater emphasis on stick skills. It occurred to me then that it would not be prudent to instruct them to follow in their father’s footsteps as my punishing style of play did not adapt to the new style of play … and as my body can attest … It also damages bones and ligaments. However, finding stick skills training instruction was nearly impossible. There just weren’t any instructors to train with during my playing days, and when I scouted around to find help for my kids, I couldn’t find anyone for them either. A light bulb flicked on in my head as I had stumbled upon a massive opportunity in the hockey training market.
I set forth to learn everything there was to learn about stick-handling and shooting. I made it my life’s work to become the best stick skills instructor on the planet. In 2008, I began training players in my practice facility and the players I worked with showed tremendous improvement in their skill development. Over the years, I’ve trained over 1,000 players including professional, collegiate, junior, high school and youth players, both male and female. While speaking with parents of a few of my clients, we discussed the geographic limitations of training players strictly out of my training studio. Thus, the initial concept for Online Hockey Training was created.
The first version was known as Online Stickhandling and focused on stick-handling skills, but players wanted instruction to help develop their shooting as well and we added a shooting element and rebranded the site as onlinehockeytraining.com. In 2018 we began the task of rebuilding, re-designing, re-shooting and re-launching as a totally digital, video drills based program. Our training approach is designed to teach players how to train to be a better hockey player by focusing on stick-handling and shooting skills as the foundation.
